Strategies to memorize for long term memory

To understand the concept of short term and long term memory  Let's start with understanding a concept behind
why brain forgets !
Our brain is just like a hard drive with a limited space, it automatically erases the unnecessary information after some time. When we have already memorized something once or twice, why do we forget even if we have understood the concept! because our brain tends to categorize information as necessary or unnecessary ones.
But on what base brain decides if its necessary or not?
This activity run by Brain is to protect you from Information overload. So the brain stores newly learned information in the short term memory.
Now question arises how can you transfer information present in short term memory to long term .
Also on what basis brain decides if the information is necessary or not.

According to a research by a German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus, he described the forgetting curve which shows that one hour after reading something new we forget about 50% of the information and after one day we forget only remember 30% of the information .

Now we know how our brain works. So how you can memorize something for long term ?????
Here are my 5 ideas to memorize something and transferring it into our long term memory .

1- REVISION IS THE KEY
We already know the new information is stored in our short term memory. And we also know that how quickly we loose any new information , so to make anything you learn is your long term memory you need a good revision.

Suppose you read a new concept today, and you are confident that you have learned everything, but you must know that your work isn't finished yet.

You need a quick 2nd revision of the read topic after 1 hour , 3rd revision on the next day , and 4th revision within a week.
keep revising in every 2-3 weeks.

This way your brain will understand that the information you have given is important, and it will store it in your long term memory.

2- TRY VISUAL STUDY
whenever we listen to a song or watch a movie we always remember the lyrics and the story of movie, why does this happen. Because our brain accepts the visual information easily then the audio information.

So this can be applied on your study pattern also, if you are only reading and building concepts then chances are brain isn't accepting 100% of it.
What i always do is making diagrams, notes, flowcharts while studying.
Learning becomes easy when you draw imaginary diagrams or flowcharts based on your reading.
Also watching YouTube tutorials of the processes or fundamentals related to the subject helped me a lot.

3- LEARN THE NECESSARY
Because i now understand how brain works so i use this trick whenever i need something to be stored in my brain. I only read things which are necessary in order to put only important information in my brain.

4- READ IN CHUNKS
In this point i want to focus the situation before exams when we insert too much in our little brain in short period, and usually end up forgetting everything after exams.

Don't confuse your brain by inserting too much information at once

This is why i suggest to never overload your brain by feeding lots of information into it at once. Let brain understand step by step and then store . And as mentioned above, keep revising at particular intervals.

5- START REVISION FROM END
When we read something, our brain is in attentive state in starting 15-20 min so we understand very well during that period, after that period we start loosing our interest and as we reach the end of our session we make a superficial reading without interest and understanding the concept.

So my idea to get the best is reading from the end during my revision period.

Suppose i read a chapter in 40 minutes, and i have 20 minutes for my first revision of the same chapter, so i always start revision from the end of the chapter, in this way i will get the best in my initial 10-15 minutes from the portion i didn't understood well during my first reading.

So these are the methods i used to store whatever i studied from short term memory to long term memory. Hopefully this helps.
